How to keep a daily question going
Most teams try a question of the day, get a good first week and then watch it fade. Four habits keep it alive.
Same time, same channel
Post at the same time each day, in the channel people already check first thing. A ritual works because nobody has to remember it. Rotate who picks the question so it is not always the manager asking.
Share of people who answered the same question, by question form
Give people answers to tap
A question with ready-made options gets far more answers than an open text box. In one web survey experiment, 99% of people answered a question when it came with options, against 79% when the same question had an empty box to fill in.1 A daily poll should take one tap and no thinking about wording.
Show yesterday's result
Start the next day by posting yesterday's result with one line on it: "Night owls win, 7 to 4." People answer more when they know the result will come back to them, and the results on how the team works give a manager something useful to act on.
Keep it safe to answer
Leave out money, health, politics, religion and anything about home life. Everything on this page can be answered by anyone, in any role, on their first day. On any question that feels personal, add a "rather not say" option.

What makes a good question of the day for work?
Anyone can answer it in a few seconds, whatever their role, and it says something about the person without asking anything private. Giving answer options helps: people tap an option far more readily than they type into an empty box.
How do I run a question of the day in Slack or Teams?

How often should we post one?
Daily suits teams that chat all day. For most teams, three a week is plenty and keeps it feeling like a treat rather than a chore. Stop and swap themes if replies drop for a week.
Can people vote without signing up?
