Survey Questions » Feedback

A feedback survey always follows something: a talk, a workshop, a company meeting, a product release, a first week on the job. The good ones are short, sent while memory is fresh, and specific about what should change next time. Below are real questions from our feedback templates for the six situations people survey most, each with the reasoning behind it and a one-click template.

Feedback survey questions collecting speech bubbles into a survey form and a sorted feedback board
Structured questions turn scattered comments into a sorted, comparable feedback board.

Presentation feedback questions

Send these within a day of the talk. Split content from delivery so the speaker knows whether to fix the material or the performance.

  • Was the content well-structured and easy to follow?Structure is the most common failure in presentations and the easiest to fix before the next one.
  • Did the presenter explain complex ideas or terms clearly?Catches the expert-audience mismatch that presenters cannot see from the stage.
  • Were the key takeaways from the presentation clearly identified? If the audience cannot name the takeaways, the talk did not have any.
  • Did the presenter handle questions and comments effectively?Q&A is unscripted, so it is where preparation and knowledge actually show.
  • What was the most confusing part of the presentation?"Most confusing" gets specifics where "any comments" gets "great job".

Workshop and training feedback questions

Rate the session right away, then follow up weeks later with application questions. Whether people used what they learned matters more than whether they enjoyed learning it.

  • How interactive did this workshop feel overall?Interaction is what separates a workshop from a lecture with worksheets.
  • How comfortable did you feel speaking up or contributing during the session? If this scores low, treat the rest of the room feedback as coming from the confident few.
  • How would you rate the facilitator's effectiveness?Keeps delivery separate from content, because the two have completely different fixes.
  • How confident are you in applying what you learned from this training?Confidence measured on the day predicts whether anything gets used next week.
  • By when do you expect to start applying what you learned?Asking for a date turns a vague intention into something you can check on later.

Town hall and company meeting questions

Run a short pulse after every all-hands. Trend the same questions across meetings; a single reading tells you little, the slope tells you a lot. For smaller recurring meetings, the Meeting Feedback Survey guide covers the same pattern at team scale, with 32 worked examples.

  • Were the topics discussed relevant to you?Relevance by team tells you whether the agenda serves everyone or just headquarters.
  • Was there adequate time for each agenda item?Chronic overruns are an agenda problem, and this question proves it with data.
  • Did you feel comfortable participating in the discussion?A town hall where only executives talk is a webcast, and attendees know it.
  • Do you feel more informed after attending the town hall meeting? The entire purpose of the meeting, reduced to one trendable answer.
  • Are there any topics you would like to see addressed in future meetings?Turns the survey into the next meeting's agenda and shows the survey gets read.

Onboarding and orientation feedback questions

Ask new hires at the end of week one, while the confusion is still specific. Their answers fix the program for the next cohort.

  • Did the orientation provide a clear understanding of your role and responsibilities?Role clarity is the single thing orientation exists to deliver.
  • Did you feel overwhelmed by the amount of information provided?Information overload is the most common onboarding failure, and nobody admits it unprompted.
  • Do you feel more prepared for your role after the orientation?Preparedness, not enjoyment, is the outcome worth trending across cohorts.
  • Were any important topics missing from the orientation?New hires see the gaps veterans stopped noticing years ago.
  • What was the most useful part of the orientation?Protects the parts that work when someone proposes shortening the program.

Product and beta testing feedback questions

Use these during or right after a beta period. Separate setup, bugs, and missing features so engineering, design, and product each get their own list.

  • How easy was it to install and set up the product for testing?Setup friction is where you lose testers, and later, customers.
  • Did you come across any bugs or issues while testing? If so, please describe.Free-text bug reports catch what your crash logging cannot see.
  • What features of the product did you find most useful?Tells you what to protect and what to put on the landing page.
  • Were there any features that you felt were missing in the product?Gap reports from real usage beat feature requests from sales calls.
  • How likely are you to use this product once it's officially released?Intent separates polite testers from future customers.

Upward feedback questions for managers

These run anonymously, upward: employees rating their own supervisor. Aggregate before sharing, and never run them in teams too small to hide in.

  • How effectively does your supervisor communicate team goals?Communication is the manager skill employees experience daily, so it anchors the survey.
  • How often does your supervisor provide constructive feedback?Reverses the performance review: does the reviewer actually review?
  • How often does your supervisor ask for your feedback on team processes?Asking is a habit, and its absence shows up here long before it shows up in results.
  • How fair is your supervisor in evaluating your performance?Perceived unfairness quietly poisons everything else a manager does.
  • How well does your supervisor recognize and reward exceptional work?Recognition costs nothing, so a low score here is pure management neglect.
Question writing

Writing good feedback questions

Four rules for feedback surveys people finish and organizers act on:

  • Send it while memory is fresh.Within 24 hours for events; a second, shorter follow-up weeks later for training.
  • Ask for the worst thing, not just the best."Most confusing part" and "least useful part" produce the fixes; praise questions produce quotes.
  • Keep it under ten questions.Feedback is a favor the respondent does you. Long forms get abandoned or rushed.
  • Close the loop.Publish one change you made because of the last survey and watch the next response rate.
Weak"Any feedback about the session?"
Better"What was the most confusing part of the presentation?"

The weak version invites a shrug. The better version, taken from the presentation template above, gives the respondent a specific job, and the answers give you a specific fix.

FAQ

Feedback survey questions: FAQ

How soon after an event should a feedback survey go out?

Within 24 hours, ideally with the link shared before people leave the room. Response rates fall fast with every day of delay, and the answers that do come in get vaguer.

What are good open-ended feedback questions?

Superlative formats work best: "what was the most useful part", "what was the most confusing part", "what one change would improve this". They force a specific answer and are far harder to skip with "all good".

How is a feedback survey different from a satisfaction survey?

A satisfaction survey produces a score you trend over time. A feedback survey produces changes: what to keep, cut, or fix for the next session. Most good post-event surveys are a hybrid, one or two ratings plus open improvement questions.

Should feedback surveys be anonymous?

Anonymous when there is a power gap, always for manager feedback and usually for internal meetings. Named is fine for external events and beta programs, where follow-up questions are half the value.

How do I get more people to answer feedback surveys?

Keep it under ten questions, say how long it takes ("2 minutes" honestly), send it immediately, and show what changed after the last one. The proof that answers get used beats any incentive.
